Backyard Desert Bird of Paradise Bloom

Energy

Huge shifts of energy such as those our world is currently experiencing affect us too. Have you noticed?

Just as our earth is impacted by the phases of the moon and pull of the tides, we humans are also affected. The sun affects the earth and us in different ways through the four seasons which correspond to four solar events, such as the Summer Solstice.

Throughout time, much has been studied, written, ritualized, practiced, and celebrated around key lunar and solar events and their significant energetic aspects. Of those associated with the Summer Solstice, a centered, personal reflection gets my attention. So very many of us are reflecting with an inner focus on what really matters, and what changes are needed.

In contrast, we may also be bucking against the reins to get out and into the world, to celebrate summer— join friends, to work for change, play, and do all the fun summer things we’ve come to love. Yet nature’s Summer Solstice energy calls us in, to our centers, to slow our roll—before we make our season’s premier cannon ball splash.

These two seemingly juxtaposed energetic callings require a mindful and conscious balance.

How do we “do” mindful reflection in the midst of world turmoil and change? We center ourselves first.

Center

Someone asked me, “How do I know when I’m centered?” We’re in our center when we hear who we are and the inner calling from the place we hold in awe, like nature, and/or what some may call a higher power. We’re not as distractable or focused on everybody else and what the heck they want. Life happens and things happen, yet we better respond and operate from our centered place.

We know we’re in our center because we feel things like confidence and peace. We’re aware of our surroundings and have a clear sense of what it is we want or need to do. We are centered. Consider the centered stance Luther teaches Georgie in Andersen Light: A Meta-Normal Novel. Our centers are home base. Where is your home base? Head? Solar plexus? Heart?

Celebrate

The Summer Solstice celebrates nature while it calls for inner reflection, a look at the relationship we have with our capital “S” Self, the true self, no trappings, just our authentic self, relaxed from postures, to know our own mind and heart.

We celebrate growth, from both the literal and figurative thought seeds we planted in Spring now maturing. We connect with the nature of Summer from our centered place. We enjoy sunlight, fresh air, and the light in nature’s colors—greens of plant life, and rainbows of flowers.

Happy Summer Solstice! Here’s to celebrating this time of year’s great light. As many believe, including Andersen Light’s dear Maria Elena, the Summer Solstice energy represents the growth of light within each of us. She would say, “It’s all about the light, mijos. Shine your light.”
