Spring’s Bellwether Buds
Spring On!

Spring springs despite what wonderful (or otherwise) things humans are up to. We sometimes ask ourselves how could it carry on amid our loss or world chaos. Yet we’re grateful Spring shares her bounty, her first peeks of green, and the promises of tight buds. Here at our house, we’re excited when we spot the first iris buds in Superspouse’s garden. It happened yesterday!

Branch Buds
Here in the desert of southern New Mexico overnight freezing temperatures have continued until the last few days, and emerging leaf buds have been shy. While I wait for the buds on tree branches in my yard, I happily witnessed the green-yellow glow around the palo verde trees on Lohman Avenue yesterday. That means their abundant yellow flowers are on the way, and my single palo verde tree will follow.

Flowers and Thorns
Cactus flowers bloom beyond protective thorns. While thorns threaten all year, most blossoms only get one chance, maybe two—if all the earthly elements come together in glorious, extraordinary conspiracy.
No hidden meaning in it—do we see the flowers before the thorns? I believe I know which Andersen Light‘s Maria Elena would see first.

Big Sky Queen
Magnificent (dare I say meta-normal?) sunsets and sunrises, like the one pictured here, prevail no matter the season. These big sky displays don’t “give a rats,” as Andersen Light’s heroine Georgie Jones would say, about what we think. They’re just dancing across as much of the sky as possible, being their best selves. So there.
Nature is a brilliant teacher. Do you, like me, need to hang out more with Nature?
Book 2
You’re going to love Book 2. I’m calling it Winter Soulstice, a working title. All the characters you know will be there, plus some new ones. Check out the blatant easter egg in the entry under Book & Author News & Events over on the News page.
